Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda by Dharmvir Bharati

The title borrows from Hindu mythology, where the Sun God’s chariot is pulled by seven horses. In Bharati's novel, six of those horses have grown weak, crippled by the societal evils of poverty, corruption, rigid class divides, moral bankruptcy, and emotional despair. The "Seventh Horse" represents Hope and Realism—the only remaining force capable of pulling the chariot of the future forward out of darkness. Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda (translated as The Sun’s Seventh Horse), published in 1952, is a groundbreaking experimental Hindi novella by Dr. Dharamvir Bharati. Departing drastically from the emotional romanticism of his first book Gunahon Ka Devta, this work stands out as one of the earliest and finest examples of metafiction in 20th-century Indian literature.
